The Los Angeles Beirut Sister City Organization was established to create a bridge of understanding and friendship between the residents of these two great cities and to foster cultural, social and business exchange.
We reach out to all who wish to foster goodwill between the two cities to contribute to our goals.
Since our founding we have accomplished the following:
- Contributions to our organization facilitated the delivery of a 40 foot container to Beirut with valuable medical supplies and equipment for the free clinics in Beirut. The LA Fire Department contributed critically needed life and safety gear to the Beirut Fire Dept.
- Participated in the Los Angeles Sister City Cultural Event at The Grove with a debke folk dancing troupe.
- Unveiled the Beirut sign at 1st and Main streets in downtown L.A.
- Participated in the Hollywood Santa Parade.
- Hosted the Lebanese Notre Dame University Choir.
Our futre plans:
- Hosting firefighters from the Beirut Fire Department for training with the LA Fire Department. Hosting a delegation from Beirut that will visit various LA City Departments to provide training and transfer of knowledge from LA to Beirut.
- Part of a collaborative led by CHF International (www.chfinternational.org) that won an important grant for 7 million dollars for improving municipality services in the poor areas of Lebanon. We are also likely to be awarded a grant to bring 20 high school students from impoverished areas of Lebanon to visit the USA in 2009.
About "Sister Cities":
The American "Sister Cities" program was established in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower. Since 1967 it has been administered by Sister Cities International (SCI), which is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network creating and strengthening partnerships between U.S. and international communities.
Sisterly ties were officially established on June 30th, 2006 during a signing ceremony between members of the Los Angeles City Council, the Mayor of Beirut, and the VP of the Beirut City Council.
